Patients with congestive heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction may benefit from a left ventricular assist device—a mechanical pump that is surgically implanted to help maintain the pumping ability of the heart when it is unable to do so on its own. LVAD is often used as an interim intervention for patients awaiting a heart transplant.
