Cardiac Surgery Programs Receive High Marks

The New York State Department of Health has released its 1998 risk-adjusted mortality rates for all New York cardiac surgery programs. Beth Israel’s score was lowest for any hospital in Manhattan and the fourth lowest in the entire state. St. Luke’s-Roosevelt also performed well when compared to other established cardiac programs in the metropolitan area.

Mortality rates for coronary bypass surgery performed in New York hospitals for 1998 (the most recent year of data available) were 2.15 per 100 patients, a decline from 2.22 per 100 patients recorded in 1997.

“The results are excellent and a fitting testimonial to Continuum’s programs and to our dedicated team of physicians, nurses and other providers,” says Robert F. Tranbaugh, M.D., director of cardiothoracic surgery at Beth Israel and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. ìWe are confident that the BIMC and SLR programs will continue to thrive in this critically important surgical discipline.î
