A diagnosis of Heart Disease can change a person’s life. In addition to medical care and traditional rehabilitation, the availability of emotional support, stress management, access to current information and a program that can foster positive lifestyle changes is essential.

Since 1995, the Center for Cardiac & Pulmonary Health at Beth Israel Medical Center has offered support groups and stress management classes, individually tailored aerobic exercise programs and nutritional counseling for individuals with heart disease, those at risk for heart disease, and their families.

Our support groups are conducted in a safe, non-judgmental environment, and participants have an opportunity to connect with others who have had similar experiences. With the help of a trained facilitator, group members explore ways of coping with feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, isolation and the loss of control that can often accompany a diagnosis of heart disease. Recent studies have demonstrated that participation in a support group as well as ongoing stress management can greatly enhance healing and recovery from heart disease and other major illnesses.

In weekly group support sessions and stress management classes, designed specifically for people with heart disease, members learn coping skills for reducing stress and tension. Stress management classes combine gentle stretching, breathing and imagery exercises and meditation. Certified instructors work with group members at their own pace and according to their own needs.

Lectures and ongoing retreats allow members to deepen their knowledge and connection with other participants. Past subjects have included “Dealing With Type A Behaviors”, “Talking With Your Doctor” and “How to Have a Healthy Sex Life After Heart Disease.”
